Finishing of stainless steel castings: the key link to improve quality and performance

Time: 2025-02-12

In the production process of stainless steel castings, the finishing link is like a finely crafted craftsman, giving the castings the final quality and appearance. This stage not only corrects defects caused by the casting process, but also improves the performance of the casting to ensure that it meets various stringent industry standards and customer requirements.

Grinding is the key process to improve the surface quality of castings. According to the surface condition and accuracy requirements of the castings, abrasives and grinding tools of different particle sizes are used. For castings with obvious burrs and flash edges on the surface, first use coarse abrasive (such as coarse grinding wheel) to remove and initially smooth the surface of the casting. Then, fine abrasives (such as sandpaper or polishing wheels) are used for fine grinding to achieve the desired roughness of the casting surface. During the grinding process, manual grinding or mechanical grinding can also be used as needed. Manual grinding is suitable for some parts with complex shapes and difficult to reach with mechanical tools, and can flexibly control the grinding force and direction; Mechanical grinding is more efficient, suitable for large area, regular shape of the casting surface.

Grinding can effectively remove the defects on the surface of the casting, such as parting line marks, pores, shrinkage holes, etc. generated during the casting process, so that the surface of the casting is smooth and flat. This not only improves the appearance quality of the casting, but also reduces the stress concentration point and improves the fatigue strength of the casting. In addition, in some application scenarios with high surface finish requirements, such as food processing equipment, medical equipment, etc., finely polished stainless steel castings can meet the requirements of hygiene and corrosion resistance.

In order to ensure the quality of the finishing process, we usually take a series of quality control measures.

After each process, there are strict inspection links, including appearance inspection, size measurement, non-destructive testing, etc.

The appearance inspection mainly checks whether there are polishing marks, welding defects, uneven surface treatment and other problems on the surface of the casting; Dimensional measurement uses precision measuring tools to detect the key dimensions of castings to ensure that they meet the design requirements; Non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, etc.) is used to detect whether there are hidden defects inside the casting, such as cracks, pores, etc.

Only the castings that have passed the layers of inspection can be delivered to the customer as the final product.
